Learning through Play

“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold”. Joseph Chilton Pearce

Our approach to Learning through Play allows our students to make their own choices.

During Learning through Play, students have the opportunity to follow their own interests. They are encouraged to initiate activities and be self-directed with the support of their teachers. They learn to take ownership of their learning. They will be gently moulded into independent children with initiative and the confidence to take risks, knowing that there is no right or wrong way.

Through play, children can develop socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. During Learning through Play, the teachers can easily observe the key competencies whilst the children are surfing on surfboards made out of cardboard on a pretend ocean, or creating potions to make a mystical creature grow, every day brings something new from the children.

What is learning through play?

Learning through play is a pedagogical approach where play is the valued mode of learning – where children can explore, experiment, discover, and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways. Learning through play is also called play-based learning.

Our effective ‘learning through play’ programme enables children to engage in self-directed play that is internally motivated. Our teachers support children in play-based learning by providing an enabling environment and sensitive interaction. The role for the teacher to discuss, embed and extend the learning with students.

What are the benefits of learning through play?

Learning through play can help schools realise the vision of The New Zealand Curriculum to develop confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners. Almost all of the values and key competencies in The New Zealand Curriculum can be developed through play-based learning. A range of learning areas can be explored with connections made across learning areas as well as to home practices and the wider world.
